Who takes Goethe-Zertifikat B2?

The Goethe-Zertifikat B2 is a German examination for young people and adults who would like to confirm their advanced language level with an official and internationally recognised certificate and live and work in Switzerland.

Individuals with a Goethe-Zertifikat B2 can:

  • understand the main content of complex texts on concrete and abstract topics and also understand specialist discussions in their own area of specialisation.
  • communicate spontaneously and fluently that a normal conversation with native speakers is possible without major effort on either side.
  • express yourself clearly and in detail on a wide range of topics, explain a point of view on a topical issue and state the advantages and disadvantages of different options.

Format of the exam

Exam Section Content Duration
Reading You read different texts such as advertisements, catalogue extracts, non-fiction texts, commentaries, reviews and reports and do tasks on them. You fill in missing words in a written text. 65 Minutes
Writing You comment in writing on a newspaper article or a short article on the Internet and correct a letter. 75 Minutes
Listening You will listen to conversations and telephone calls, then correct or add to what you have heard and classify statements. In addition, you will listen to an interview on a current social topic and complete tasks on it. ca. 40 Minutes
Speaking You introduce yourself to your interlocutor, comment on a current topic and negotiate orally with your interlocutor. 10-15 Minutes

Rating by the Goethe-Institut

All candidates who have passed all parts of the German exam will receive a certificate. On the back of the certificate there is an explanation of the results.

The score achieved can be interpreted as follows:

89 - 80 good
79 - 70 satisfactory
69 - 60 sufficient
59 - 0 failed
