The Goethe-Zertifikat A2 requires elementary language skills and corresponds to the second level (A2) on the six-level competence scale of the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR).

Who takes Goethe-Zertifikat A2?
The Goethe-Zertifikat A2 is a German exam for adults learning German as a foreign language. People with this Goethe-Zertifikat want to live and work in Switzerland and need a language diploma for their visa. They also want to prove their learning success at level A2 with an official and internationally recognised certificate.
People with the Goethe-Zertifikat A2 can:
- understand and use sentences and frequently used expressions in everyday situations.
- communicate in simple, routine situations involving the exchange of information on familiar and common topics.
- describe in simple terms their own background and education, their immediate environment and things connected with their needs.
Format of the exam

| Lesen | You read texts such as short newspaper articles, emails, advertisements and public notice boards and do tasks on them. | 30 Minutes |
| Schreiben | You write messages that relate to your immediate living environment. | 30 Minutes |
| Hören | You listen to everyday conversations, announcements and interviews from the radio, news on the phone and public announcements and work on tasks related to these. | ca. 30 Minutes |
| Sprechen | You ask questions and answer questions about yourself, you share something about your own life and you agree or plan something together with your interview partner. | 15 Minutes |

Rating by the Goethe-Institut
All candidates who have passed all parts of the German exam will receive a certificate. On the back of the certificate there is an explanation of the results.
The score achieved can be interpreted as follows:
