The Goethe-Zertifikat A1: Start Deutsch 1 is a German exam for adults learning German as a foreign language. People with this Goethe certificate would like to live and work in Switzerland and need a language diploma for their visa. In addition, people would like to prove their learning success at level A1 with an official and internationally recognised certificate.
People with the Goethe-Zertifikat A1: Start Deutsch 1 can:
- communicate in a simple way when the interlocutor speaks slowly and clearly.
- understand and use familiar, everyday and frequently used expressions and simple sentences (e.g. information about themselves and their family, shopping, work, local area).
- introduce themselves and others and ask other people questions about themselves - e.g. where they live, what people they know or what things they have.
Format of the exam

Rating by the Goethe-Institut
All candidates who have passed all parts of the German exam will receive a certificate. On the back of the certificate there is an explanation of the results.
The score achieved can be interpreted as follows:
